GET STARTED

This page provides information on how you can get started using the Washington State University Vancouver ePortfolio site.

The ePortfolio system provides a digital, secure place to collect and manage your personal, academic, and career information, and then integrate and share your information with others. You will have access to this information while you are a student here and for a short time after graduating. What follows is a brief sketch of how you will do this. The most successful way to learn this sytem is to get started!

OK--WHAT DO I DO NEXT?

Login to ePortfolio

You will be using your Network ID (NID) and password to access this system. Fill in your NID and password, and click on the login button. You will see your personal welcome page. Be sure to logout when you are finished.

I'M LOGGED IN, NOW WHAT?

You have a Repository where you can upload and collect evidence of your learning. Your evidence can be in a wide variety of formats including audio, video, word-processed documents, spreadsheets, web pages, flash files, etc.

Also, to assist you in putting together various components in your ePortfolio, various Forms exist to produce information about yourself that you can use and reuse but not have to reinvent. You can make folders to organize your Repository into various directories so you can find them again easily. Each time you associate new evidence of your learning with a Matrix, you'll be asked to verify that you have proper ownership or permission to use the item. For more information on Copyright see: Copyright Info

You can put together a presentation of evidence from your Repository, using Forms you have filled out to produce a Presentation. Then, you can share your Presentations via email notification to individuals, a group, or make them publicly accessible.

WHERE'S EVERYBODY ELSE?

Common Interest Groups (CIGs)

In the ePortfolio system, COMMON INTEREST GROUPS (CIGS) may appear as tabs on your personal welcome page if you have been added to the group. Click on the tab and you will see what your options are within the CIG.

Public CIGs

If you don't have any active tabs on your welcome page, you may join a public CIG if the CIG allows open participation. You can find out what CIGs are open by clicking on Membership. You will see a short description of the CIG. If it interests you, click on the checkbox next to the CIG and then click on JOIN. You will have a new tab at the top of your workspace as a member of that group.

NOW WHAT?

Once you are a member of a CIG, look at the home page and tools in the CIG to get a better idea of the group and see how you can participate. Faculty will require you to upload and share evidence of your learning, but you can also upload and share other items that are not required for a class. This is your space.

WHAT SHOULD I KEEP IN MIND WHEN USING THE ePORTFOLIO ?

Once you decide to publish a part of your ePortfolio, keep in mind that you will be making it available to a wider audience of internet users. Thus, you must pay careful attention to the contents of what you choose to publish. While Washington State University supports each student’s right to creative expression, you must take certain precautions when posting your ePortfolio. In particular,

  • Become familiar with copyright issues if you are utilizing or integrating digital media (e.g., songs, video clips) that you have not created on your own. For more information, see: Copyright Info
  • Understand what is and what is not copyright protected. This is your responsibility.
  • Assume that everything you post on the web is public. Any other internet user can access your web content. Because the site is connected to your name, the contents of the site are your responsibility. Pay special attention to:
    • How you critique others' work, including your tone and word choice
    • How you use evidence: avoid plagiarism by using appropriate citations. For more information see: http://www.conduct.wsu.edu/default.asp?PageID=343
    • Whether any contents may be slanderous or libelous

WHO SEES MY ePORTFOLIO WORK?

You control who sees your work. By using a presentation tool, you will be able to invite others within or outside of our system to view it or make it public. In some courses, you will be required to make specific documents or presentations available to others.

AM I LIMITED AS TO HOW I CAN USE THIS SPACE?

Yes, as with the use of other WSU Vancouver computer services, you agree to an acceptable use policy which applies to all computer networks and systems at WSU Vancouver, including the ePortfolio system. Unauthorized access is prohibited by law. For more information, see: Information and Consent
